Q: What is Naxos Spoken Word Library?
A: NSWL is a streaming service comprising one of the most comprehensive collections of classic audiobook material available online.

Naxos AudioBooks is a leading audiobook publisher, producing new content yearly, concentrating largely on literary classics and educational themes. NSWL offers the entire Naxos AudioBooks catalog, many of which can be followed with the text on screen.

Also included are Naxos Educational products, focusing closely on the background to operas and the lives of great composers; recordings are illustrated with music from the unrivaled Naxos catalog.

NSWL is dedicated to providing additional audiobook publishers, expanding your title selection choices and listening enjoyment. A wide variety of English, German and French audiobooks are available.

Q: What are the main benefits for educational institutions?
A: NSWL is an excellent tool for English, History, Music, Arts, Philosophy and Religious education. It gives teachers the opportunity to plan course work and assignments around a collection of audiobook material. Students will have access to these recordings, through their computers, on or off campus, round the clock. Multiple users are able to listen to the same track at the same time. In the classroom, teachers can choose from a great selection of audiobook content to play without having to managing lost or damaged CDs.

A: As an individual subscriber, you can access NSWL with your password from any audio-enabled computer with an Internet connection, and the software requirements specified in the Technical FAQ section. If your institution requests IP Authenticated access, then you will require access to the university intranet through a proxy server.

Q: How is it priced?
A: Naxos has built its reputation on providing affordable access to fine music and audiobook content. NSWL is a continuation of the same concept. Each institution decides on the number of users they want to have access to the service (minimum five users for universities and three for schools). The number of subscriptions issued, charged at a decreasing rate, will determine the fee. For individuals, the subscription fee is US$150 per year. To find out more, click here to send a query.

Q: Are there titles on Naxos Spoken Word Library that you cannot buy on CD?
A: Yes. The entire Naxos AudioBooks catalog is available on NSWL before CDs are released and after they are discontinued from the CD catalog.

Q: Can the on-screen texts be printed out?
A: Yes, text for public domain productions are available to print. The text of copyrighted titles cannot be printed out as this would violate the rights of the publisher of the text.

Q: What about the copyright in the literary works and other texts used?
A: Naxos Digital Services Ltd. has agreements with all publishers whose text are used in the recordings and we pay them for the use of the text.

Q: Does the school or university need any licenses or agreements to use our service?
A: No, as our agreements with the publishers of the copyrighted text include the fair-use rights of schools and universities.

Q: How does Naxos Spoken Word Library work?
A: NSWL is streamed to you, via the Internet, directly from our servers in Hong Kong. A sophisticated search engine enables you to select and listen to the audiobook content through your computer or device, using either headphones or speakers.

Q: In what format is the music streamed?
A: The music is streamed in Flash AAC format.

Q: How is the sound quality compared to a CD?
A: With a broadband, ISDN or DSL Internet connection, the music can be streamed at near-CD quality.

Q: How do I log in?
A: There are two options.
(1) Start up the browser, go to www.naxosspokenwordlibrary.com, type in your username and password, and click the Login button. The procedure is the same for logging in at home, in the library or at the office.
(2) For educational institutions, you may go to a different web site. See IP-authentication below.

Q: What is IP authentication?
A: If you represent an institution subscribing for multiple simultaneous accesses, you can choose to have a dedicated URL for your users of NSWL. You will then be able to access NSWL without an additional login, as long as you have the rights to your institution's intranet. You are authenticated via the verification of your IP address, which tells us if you are within the premise of the institution.

Q: How many simultaneous users can access the library?
A: There is no limit to the number of simultaneous users you may have. Each institution decides how many subscriptions they wish to purchase. We recommend one subscription per user or workstation.

Q: What does Timeout mean?
A: A Timeout happens when a user's session has been idle or inactive for longer than a specified period of time. A session is considered idle or inactive when there is no activity (i.e. no keyboard/click interactions) from the user on NSWL’s main window. Note that pausing the player is not considered an activity. However, if you are playing an unabridged audiobook, the transition from one track to the next will reset the idle or inactive time to zero and will keep your session alive or active.

For Individuals, the Timeout setting is set to 12 hours. For others users, the Timeout setting can be set on the Manage Account page. The setting’s range can be from 4 to 240 minutes (4hrs).

When the Timeout happens, the user session is terminated and the user will be required to re-login.

Q: What does "session has expired" mean?
A: The "session has expired" message will appear if you have remained idle or inactive on the site after the Timeout setting has been reached. Please see to What does Timeout mean?.

Q: Is it possible to download the content or burn it to CD?
A: No. It is not possible to download or burn to CD any content NSWL. Users can easily gain online access to the catalog number of the production they need, and purchase it at their local bookstore, or order it through our online retailers which you can find on the website www.naxos-audiobooks.com.

Q: How reliable is the service?
A: Since NSWL's content is streamed through the Internet, the quality of the service is dependent upon the quality of service provided by your local Internet Service Provider. Naxos makes every possible effort to ensure that its servers have sufficient capacity and adequate rate of connectivity to provide each customer with a quality of service comparable to current standards in the industry in the customer's locale. Maintenance is performed at times of low usage and will be announced in advance.

Q: Can I use NSWL in a language other than English?
A: You will find "Choose a language" in the upper right-hand corner of the NSWL header, above Keyword Search; make your language choice from the drop down menu and some web pages or part of a web page will be displayed in the chosen language. If you log into NSWL with an administrator username and password on behalf of an institution, you will see the "Language" parameter in "Manage Account". This parameter allows some web pages or part of a web page to be displayed in the chosen language, such as Korean. Note, however, functions cannot be done in the chosen language if the chosen language is not English, and only some pages will be in the chosen language. For instance, Keyword Search function still needs to be done in English.

Naxos Historical, Nostalgia, and Jazz Legends recordings are not available in the United States due to the uncertain legal situation regarding pre-1972 sound recordings.
